IFFHS Claim La Liga Is The Best League In The World

According to IFFHS, the English Premier League is no longer the strongest league in the world. The Spanish Primera Division is the new number one in IFFHS' special ranking system.

Every July it is possible to make the first assessment of the relative strengths of the various leagues. The methodology for determining the current strength of the national leagues takes into consideration that, because of the national and international schedules, the South American and west Asian leagues are better placed in the first half of the year and those from northern and eastern Europe less so.

The rankings indicate that the English Premier League has shown a drop in performance not previously seen in the first decade of the 21st century. At the beginning of the year the English league had a lead of 110 points ahead of the Spaniards. In the month of July though, the Spanish Primera División was ahead of the Englishmen by 94 points.

The trend shows that the Spanish Primera Division is on the way to becoming the strongest league in the world. But the gaps to the next placed national leagues are small.

A similar drop in performance to the Englishmen took place also in the leagues of Ukraine and Romania. Negative trends have also been shown by the national leagues of the Netherlands, Turkey and Greece while the leagues of Portugal and Belgium remained constant.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has dropped a hint that centre-back Nemanja Vidic could possibly leave Old Trafford during the current transfer window.

Speculation about the Serb's future continued for much of last season and has not dissipated over the summer, as reports continue to link Vidic with a possible move to Real Madrid.

There have also been reports claiming that the player was unhappy about not having been awarded a pay rise this summer.

When asked by reporters if he could offer any explanation of the situation after United's pre-season friendly win over Philadelphia Union, Ferguson replied: "I can't clarify it at all."

When subsequently asked if he expected Vidic to be a United player next season he would only add: "I believe so."

Reports have claimed in the past that Vidic's wife was unhappy in Manchester and wanted to move somewhere warmer.

Reports in the Manchester Evening News have claimed that the player's representatives have been ordered not to make any comment on the matter.

Ahead of the World Cup, Vidic's agent had insisted that any move was down to Vidic himself and would only be concluded once the tournament in South Africa was over.

Champions League to try out extra officials experiment

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) says Champions League games will have two extra assistant referees next year.
The system was tried in last season's Europa League and will be retained there and used in Europe's elite club competition for the next two years.
The refereeing experiment will allow Fifa to take a decision on its long-term viability in 2012.

Goal-line technology will be discussed at the IFAB's next meeting in October.
Other tournaments in Asia and South America will also try out the extra officials system.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has long been a staunch opponent of using technology to help referees make decisions, but the outcry over high-profile mistakes such as Frank Lampard's disallowed goal in England's World Cup loss to Germany seem to have caused a softening of the official stance.
Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke told BBC Sport the Lampard incident, where the ball hit the underside of the bar and clearly bounced down over the line, before bouncing away and no goal being given, had been "a bad day" for tournament organisers.
He also said the 2010 World Cup would be the last "under the current refereeing system," without giving further specific details.

Jose Mourinho Wants To Sign A Central Defender

July 16, 2010 - Madrid, Madrid, Espa a - MADRID, 16/07/2010.- Real Madrid's Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, during his first training session as coach of the team at Valdebebas Sport City in Madrid, Spain, 16 July 2010.

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is seeking a world class central defender for the upcoming 2010-11 campaign, according to latest reports.

Spanish sports daily Marca reports that the Portuguese wants to bolster his defence as he looks to launch a raid on the Spanish Primera Liga title and the Champions League. With wingers Angel di Maria and Pedro Leon already signed and midfielder Sami Khedira being chased, los Blancos are now directing their intentions towards signing a centre-back.

It's been reported that the former Chelsea and Inter coach has identified these four centre-backs: David Luiz (Benfica), Thiago Silva (Milan), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United), Bruno Alves (Porto). Vidic has been linked with a move to the Bernabeu for quite some time while Luiz and Alves have shone in the Portuguese league.

However, this does not mean that Madrid have forgone their initial plan to sign Brazilian international right-back Maicon from Inter. Madrid reportedly still have interest in the player, but they cannot proceed at the moment because Nerazzurri president Massimo Moratti is not willing to let his prized asset leave at a low price.

Berbatov shines as Man Utd beat Celtic

Dimitar Berbatov scored one goal and contributed to two more on Friday as English powerhouse Manchester United launched their North American tour with a 3-1 friendly victory over Celtic.

Substitutes Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley also scored for Manchester United, while Georgios Samaras converted a penalty for Scottish Premier League club Celtic. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson fielded a strong line-up that included Berbatov, Edwin van der Sar, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs - who received an especially warm welcome from Canadian fans.

The match was played at the 50,000-seat Rogers Centre, where a temporary grass pitch was installed where the Toronto Argonauts normally play their Canadian Football League gridiron games on a synthetic surface. Berbatov opened the scoring in the 34th minute, deftly controlling a cross from Mame Biram Diouf with his right foot before using his left to bury it in the net.

Celtic equalized in the 61st after Chris Smalling, making his Manchester United debut after a transfer from Fulham in January, was penalised for pulling Joe Ledley to the ground in the area. Samaras, who came on in the second half, converted to level the score.

United responded, and in the 79th minute Berbatov found some room on the right and crossed for Welbeck, who scored from close range. Bulgaria's Berbatov then combined with Cleverley, whose shot in the 86th deflected off a Celtic defender to get past stranded Celtic keeper Lukasz Zaluska.

United absentees
Manchester United are making their third pre-season trip to North America since Sir Alex Ferguson became manager in 1986. 2010 FIFA World Cup™ players Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Park Ji-Sung and Nemanja Vidic were left at home to recover after playing at South Africa 2010. Ferguson was also without the services of several injured players, including captain Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves.

United's next stop is Philadelphia, they will take on the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday. They play the Kansas City Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium on 25 July, and they face the MLS All-Stars in Houston on 28 July before travelling to Guadalajara, Mexico, to play Chivas. Celtic, who opened their North American tour on Wednesday with a 1-0 defeat to the Philadelphia Union, play the Seattle Sounders on Saturday.

"The first game is one you want to get out of the road because fitness comes into it, as does the time you give to your players," said Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "I was pleased as some of the performances were good. We try to get the preparation to a point where they want to want to start playing games. There was a little bit of boredom in the training yesterday.

"They had seven days at Carrington, four days in Chicago; they were desperate for a game. The one thing pre-season brings on is the desire to start playing games. No-one likes pre-season. It does not matter how good it is. Nobody enjoys it because it is rough and tough. It is the hard bit of the game. Thankfully we are on that route of playing."

Celtic manager Aaron Lennon said: "It was really pleasing tonight. I thought the level of performance was excellent. There were a number of positives to take out of the game. There was a lot of good football played out there and the players enjoyed the atmosphere and the experience.

"The second goal came probably after our best spell in the game. I was really pleased with the response of the players, particularly in the second half. Samaras made a difference when he came on."
