Greece 0 Argentina 2: match report

It is fortunate for Diego Maradona, and for Argentina, that the latter are rather better at making friends than the former. Off the pitch, the country’s manager has been caustic and controversial, offending the game’s great and the good with scarcely-concealed glee. On the pitch, his team have been nothing but charming.
Even when faced with opponents as cynical as Greece in a game in which they needed only a point to top their group and book a meeting with Mexico, Argentina abided by the principles Maradona has imbued in their play.
June 22, 2010 - South Africa - Football - Greece v Argentina FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 - Group B - Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane, South Africa - 22/6/10..Martin Palermo (R) celebrates scoring the second goal for Argentina with Lionel Messi.

Their style is engaging, their patterns elaborate. It may have taken an ugly bludgeon of a goal from Martin Demichelis to break the deadlock and a tap-in from Martin Palermo to seal victory and top spot in Group B, but Argentina never once veered from the role as the World Cup’s great entertainers.
Greece, though, did their best to test Maradona’s patience. Otto Rehhagel, of course, has never set his teams out to make friends. Rather, he sets them out to deter enemies. Greece are designed to drain even the most enthusiastic of energy, to asphyxiate all ambition.
And so it was here. The German lined his side up with a five-man back line, three industrious central midfielders and Georgios Samaras alone in what passed for their attack. The final member of his 11, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, a central defender by trade for his club side Genoa, was simply tasked with making sure Messi, captain for the evening, had company throughout his special day.
It was, for large swathes of the evening, a master class in the art of destruction. True, so dazzling are the individual talents even in an Argentine reserve team that the Greek wall was prized open on occasion, but chances were scarce.
The best of them, in the opening period, fell to Sergio Aguero. One he made himself, whipping his body round his marker, a burst of acceleration reducing two more Greek defenders to dust and forcing Alexandros Tzorvas into a fine save. The second, blocked on the line by Loukas Vyntra after the Greek goalkeeper fumbled Diego Milito’s cross, was rather more opportunistic.
Where artistry fails, though, this Argentina have the opportunity of calling in the artillery. Tzorvas, unorthodox but somehow effective, denied Juan Sebastian Veron, as languid as ever, from 35 yards, Messi from 25 and Maxi Rodriguez from 15.
Nothing seemed to work. Maradona, frustrated, was reduced to impromptu lessons in how to take a throw-in. Prowling his technical area, arms folded, that he did not approve was evident. Likewise that he was not prepared to stand back and applaud such disciplined dourness, despite the knowledge that a point was enough.
Perhaps stung by the sight of Samaras fizzing one effort narrowly wide after the incomprehensible lapse in concentration which Martin Demichelis likes to introduce into every game he plays, Maradona into action.
On came Angel Di Maria, another electric attacker, for Liverpool’s Maxi Rodriguez. Argentina attacked with renewed vigour. Messi tested Tzorvas, again, from range, before the Panathinaikos managed to smother Mario Bolatti’s shot from Demichelis’s flick on.
The warning as to the Bayern Munich player’s aerial threat went unheeded. Di Maria sent in another fierce corner and Demichelis leapt highest - no mean feat, given the size of Greece’s defence - only to see his header blocked by Diego Milito. No matter. Demichelis pounced, his fearsome shot owing more to determination than talent. Tzorvas, finally, was beaten.
Greece, finally, crumbled. Messi struck the bar, dancing around desperate lunges on the edge of the box, his mere presence on the field testament to Maradona’s devotion to victory in style.
Still, though, he cannot score. Messi has been in fine form in the opening salvos of this tournament, yet he has managed only to rattle posts and bars, to muddy goalkeeper’s gloves throughout South Africa. He must wonder when his luck will change.
Still, at least he is surrounded by team-mates rather more kindly looked upon by fate. As injury time, and the plane home for the Greeks, loomed, Messi skipped past two, three more, his shot blocked well by Tzorvas.
The rebound fell to Palermo, the veteran whose goal brought Argentina here. He, like his manager, is not concerned with making friends. The final act could not have fallen to a better man.

Greece 2:1 Nigeria: match report

June 17, 2010 - South Africa - Football - Greece v Nigeria FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 - Group B - Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein, South Africa - 17/6/10..Dimitrios Salpingidis (R) celebrates scoring the first goal for Greece with Loukas Vyntra (L) and Konstantinos Katsouranis (C.
A blunder by Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama handed Greece their first victory at the fifth attempt in two World Cup finals.

It also maintains their slim hopes of an appearance in the next stage although their final Group B game is against Argentina.

Enyeama, whose side were down to 10 men following Sani Kaita's red card, failed to deal with a soft shot from Alexandros Tziolis in the 72nd minute.

The rebound fell to Vasileios Torosidis, who toe-poked the ball home to give Greece victory.

Nigeria now face an early exit. Yet the game had started so well for them. They took the lead after 16 minutes following a defensive howler by their opponents.

Greece failed to cut out an inswinging free-kick from Kalu Uche and goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas was left rooted to the spot as the ball nestled in the net behind him.

While Uche celebrated, Tzorvas was left shaking his head in disbelief.

It was an early setback for Greece following their opening-day defeat by South Korea.

They responded 13 minutes later when skipper Georgios Karagounis tried to chip Enyeama from distance but the goalkeeper was able to make a comfortable save.

Then Karagounis floated in a corner only for Liverpool defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos to send his header high over the bar.

The match took a dramatic twist in the 34th minute when Nigeria were reduced to 10 men.

Kaita was handed a straight red card by referee Oscar Ruiz following a tussle with Torosidis. Kaita showed his studs to the defender and was immediately banished to the dressing room.

Greece coach Otto Rehhagel reacted by bringing on striker Georgios Samaras instead of defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos two minutes later.

And they almost drew level in the 39th minute only for Enyeama to superbly block a shot from Salpingidis.

Greece stepped up the pace and Samaras then saw his effort cleared off the line by Lukman Haruna.

Nigeria were finally breached a minute before the break when Salpingidis scored the equaliser, his effort deflecting off a defender after Konstantinos Katsouranis had played the ball into his path.

It was a historic moment for Greece - their first goal in the finals.

Nigeria made a confident start to the second half and Uche saw his clever cross palmed on to the roof of the net by Enyeama in the 48th minute.

Greece hit back and Kyrgiakos sent a header at the back post into the arms of Enyeama seven minutes later following a corner from Karagounis.

They kept pushing forward and Thefonais Gekas saw his close-range effort parried by the goalkeeper in the 59th minute.

Nigeria launched a swift counter attack and Aiyegbeni Yakubu's shot was blocked by Tzorvas.

The ball broke to substitute Chinedu Obasi but he somehow managed to find the wrong side of the post when it seemed easier to score.

Nigeria were again grateful to Enyeama in the 68th minute when he clawed away a powerful header from Samaras.

Then came the mistake by the goalkeeper although he did well to beat away Tziolis's effort in stoppage time to prevent Greece extending their lead.

Greece v Nigeria: match preview

June 16, 2010 - Bloemfontein, SOUTH AFRICA - epa02204864 Greek national soccer team players perform during their team's training session in the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontain, South Africa, 16 June 2010. The FIFA World Cup 2010 match between Greece and Nigeria take place in Bloemfontein on 17 June.
Group B

Greece v Nigeria
Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein
Kick-off: Thur June 17, 3pm BST

Both teams lost their opening Group B games with poor performances, so both need a massive improvement to stand any chance of challenging Argentina and South Korea for the two qualifying places.

Otto Rehhagel caused a surprise by leaving out imposing Liverpool central defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos in the 2-0 defeat by South Korea, and he could be recalled.

June 16, 2010 - Bloemfontein, SOUTH AFRICA - epa02205402 Nigeria national soccer team player Dickson Etuhu (C) during their team's training session at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontain, South Africa, 16 June 2010. The FIFA World Cup 2010 match between Greece and Nigeria take place in Bloemfontein on 17 June.
Lars Lagerback may consider replacing Chinedu Obasi with Peter Odemwingie.

Touchline duel

Otto Rehhagel v Lars Lagerback: Two hugely experienced coaches will treat this one like a chess match. A German faces a Swede but it is the latter who boasts the World Cup experience and that could work in his favour. However, Rehhagel has the experience of more than 1,000 Bundesliga games, so this offers a fascinating clash.

And both have to win; the losers go home.

Talking tactics

Lagerback will probably ask Fulham’s Dickson Etuhu to drop back to a holding role and that could help negate a three-man attack which was so disappointing last time out.

What they say

Otto Rehhagel: "We still have an opportunity and can recover after losing the first game. First of all we have to keep our mistakes to a minimum. We have to play to our full potential and give everything.

Lars Lagerback: "I know that my Super Eagles players will handle this situation very well so from my point of view I am very positive going into the next game. It doesn't matter if Greece had lost or won."

Key clash

Sotorios Kyrgiakos v Aiyegbeni Yakubu: A Merseyside clash like no other. Liverpool meets Everton with Kyrgiakos likely to be the man charged with keeping Yakubu quiet.

But when their club teams last met Kyrgiakos had been sent-off by the time Yakubu came on, at Anfield in February. Liverpool won that game 1-0.

About a million South Korean fans, including 200,000 in Seoul, filled the boulevards, stadiums and parks on Saturday to cheer their team's 2-0 win over Euro 2004 champions Greece.
After the game, fans in celebratory mood bought five times more condoms than during the team's lacklustre 2006 World Cup performance, the JoongAng Daily reported on Monday.

Other winners were convenience stores and fried chicken outlets as fans took to the streets, the paper said.
It said Bokwang Family Mart chain stores saw a near doubling of sales in spots where fans had gathered.
Stores in residential areas also did well as those tuning in at home bought three times the usual amount of beer and more than twice the number of snacks.

South Korea 2-0 Greece. Koreans hold all the aces

Korea Republic claimed the first victory at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ as a goal early in each half made it a disappointing start for Group B opponents Greece.

The South Koreans were the dominant force for virtually all of the first half in the Port Elizabeth Stadium although they had to withstand some initial pressure from Greece with Vasileios Torosidis seeing an effort fly off target. The same player should then have scored following Georgios Karagounis's corner but he put a decent chance wide from nine yards.

Huh Jung-Moo's side shrugged off that scare and proceeded to pin their opponents back, and with only seven minutes gone they forged ahead. A free-kick from near the left-hand corner flag found the blue shirts all at sea and at the far post Lee Jung-Soo pounced to sidefoot home and become his country's fastest-ever scorer at a FIFA World Cup.

Greece, European champions in 2004, never recovered from that setback and Korea smelled the chance of further goals with Manchester United's Park Ji-Sung always a danger and Yeom Ki-Hun also pulling the strings. In the 28th minute the South Koreans, fast-raiding and adroit with their ball control, fashioned an outstanding chance to double their advantage as Park Ji-Sung slid a lovely ball into the feet of Park Chu-Young.

Park Chu-Young was clear of the last man but just as he attempted to seal his strong run with a scoring finish, a combination of the back-pedalling Loukas Vyntra and Alexandros Tzorvas denied him, the goalkeeper making a vital intervention to deflect the ball over. Greece had to change their approach and Otto Rehhagel decided to take off captain Karagounis at the break with Christos Patsatzoglou coming in. However with another goal seven minutes into the second period, Korea put the game as good as out of reach.

It was a disaster for Greek defending as they gave possession away inside their own half through Vyntra and were left helpless as Park Ji-Sung took ruthless advantage. There was strength, control and determination in his run as he tore into the penalty area before burying a left-footed shot past Tzorvas to become only the second Asian player to score in three different FIFA World Cups, having also found the net in 2002 and 2006. It should have been three minutes later as Park Chu-Young dashed between defenders to meet a cross from the right but he could not keep his header down.

Greece, who had not managed a goal in any of their three previous FIFA World Cup games – all of which had been lost in 1994 – had no option but to give everything to try and claw back the deficit. They looked to Theofanis Gekas, who with ten goals was the leading scorer in European qualifying, to inspire an recovery, and he tried an ambitious overhead kick which went over. Soon after Pantelis Kapetanos scooped the ball over as it was drilled in from the left while Gekas forced Jung Sung-Ryong into a fine save at the end. But there was no dispute that Korea were good value for their three points.

Korea Republic-Greece preview

"The next game is always the most important." Coaches and footballers alike have been using this old adage to emphasise their focus on an upcoming match for decades. At the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, the phrase "the first game is the most important" is arguably more appropriate for the likes of Korea Republic and Greece, who go head to head on Saturday.

Considering the strength of the other two teams in Group B, Argentina and Nigeria, this clash could well prove decisive. La Albiceleste are undoubted group favourites, while the other three will all feel they are capable of claiming second spot and a place in the last 16.

The match
Korea Republic–Greece, Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth (Port Elizabeth Stadium), Saturday 12 June, 13.30 (local time)

Although Saturday's clash will be the first time these two sides have met at a FIFA World Cup, there have been two previous encounters between the two nations. History favours the Asians, who ran out 1-0 friendly winners in February 2007, following a 1-1 draw in January 2006.

Korea Republic were the only team to remain undefeated in Asian Zone qualifying, with seven victories and a draw, and as a result go into the tournament full of confidence despite losing each of their final warm-up matches 1-0, against Belarus and Spain. The Greeks, meanwhile, took the long road to South Africa. The 2004 European champions had to come through a tricky play-off tie with Ukraine to book their place at the finals.

Players to watch
Ji-Sung Park vs Georgios Karagounis

Ji-Sung Park is the undisputed star of the Korea Republic team. Thanks to his exploits with Premier League powerhouse Manchester United, the attacking all-rounder is an idol in his homeland and in 2008 became the first ever Asian player to win the UEFA Champions League.

The 29-year-old faces an intriguing midfield battle with Georgios Karagounis at the Port Elizabeth Stadium. The Panathinaikos captain is hailed as the heartbeat of the Greece side and will be doing his best to break down the Koreans' attacking endeavours with another typically industrious display.

The stat
0 – Greece crashed out of their only FIFA World Cup to date in 1994 with zero points and zero goals. In the USA they lost 4-0 to Argentina, 2-0 to Nigeria and 4-0 to Bulgaria. They will now be hoping to put things right against the Albiceleste and the Super Eagles at South Africa 2010.

What they said
"Countries like South Korea have great team spirit and plenty of passion. We won't disappoint the Greek people. You feel as though you are among the best teams in the world, and that's no small thing." Otto Rehhagel, Greece coach

"In our eyes, the match against Greece is the most important of the group stage. If we can win that, we'll have the opportunity to play differently against Argentina and Nigeria." Lee-Young-Pyo, Korea Republic defender

Voice of the fans
"I can hardly wait to see who wins this game. The winner of this match will go through to the next round with Argentina." FIFA.com user jungho_hwang.

The question
Can the Greeks score their first ever FIFA World Cup goal or even pick up a maiden victory in only their second appearance on the biggest stage of all?

Group B Betting Preview

June 12, 2010 - South Africa - Football - Argentina v Nigeria FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 - Group B - Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa - 12/6/10..Argentina's Gabriel Heinze (Front) in action against Nigeria's Kalu Uche.
Group B Outright Odds
Argentina 8.50
Nigeria 251.0
South Korea 151.0
Greece 251.0

This group is all about the race for second spot as we all expect Argentina and Diego Maradona to go through as winners. Granted, much has been written about El Diego's tenure in charge but he has enough talent at his disposal and the guaranteed respect of his players to ensure they top the group to set up a clash with the runners-up of Group A.

Argentina certainly may have made heavy weather of qualifying but there is no doubting the quality in the squad. Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain ran riot in La Liga last season and there is always Diego Milito to consider. Scoring goals won't be a problem for the Albiceleste. Keeping their suspect temperament in check and playing well for more than three games may be, though. Back them at 1.44 to win the group.

June 12, 2010 - South Africa - Football - Argentina v Nigeria FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010 - Group B - Ellis Park Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa - 12/6/10..Nigeria's Chidi Odiah looks dejected.
Greece ruined the summer of 2004 for many bookies when they charged to the European Championships at 151.0. Wily old Otto Rehhagel qualified Greece for their second World Cup in the play-offs and his side will be as resolute and dogged as always, which won't be pretty on the eye. If you want entertainment go to the cinema.

Nigeria have been beset with their regular mishaps in preparations, struggling to organise friendlies and hiring a new manager in February despite finishing third in the Africa Cup of Nations. Lars Lagerback has a major job on his hands and the absence of John Obi Mikel is another blow. The Nigerian FA have hopes of reaching the semi-finals but it's more likely they'll be home before the postcards arrive in Lagos.

South Korea lost their most recent friendly against favourites Spain 1-0 and gave La Roja a few scares. It took a screamer from Jesus Navas for Korea to be broken down and they've kept clean sheets in four of the last six. The team have been preparing using altitude tents and their destiny will likely be determined by their opener with Greece.

Betting Potential
Scoping around for value is all about who you fancy to finish second behind Argentina. All three sides are capable of beating each other and the bookies have their concerns about Greece, who have never scored in the World Cup, with Nigeria the favourites to progress and South Korea as outsiders. A dual forecast of Argentina/Nigeria progressing is valued at 2.20, Argentina/Greece 2.90 and Argentina/South Korea 5.17.

This is a tough group to call as the three lesser teams can all beat each other on their day. Argentina as group winners on the other hand at 1.44 should be safe money.

Best Bet
Greece against South Korea is unlikely to be an epic. The Greeks played out a 2-2 draw with North Korea in May but this match with their rivals from the south will surely be a tighter affair. Don't expect many goals so I'm backing a half-time draw at 1.83, under 2 goals at 1.88 and Greece to win by one at 4.0.

Outside Bet
Argentina to notch up seven points at 3.25. The bookies have their doubts over Messi and co. taking maximum points with a 100% record in the group priced at 3.50. Expect them to slip up somewhere, perhaps in the last game against Greece if the European outfit need a result, which is likely.

Team Profile - Greece

Confederation:UEFA

Star Players:Theofanis Gekas, Sotiris Kyrgiakos

Best World Cup Finish:First Round (1994)

Current FIFA Ranking:13

Strengths:Tactics and spirit

Weaknesses:Aging squad

Fans:Partisan

Coach: Otto Rehhagel
Confederation: UEFA
FIFA Ranking (Apr 10): 12
Previous Appearances: 1 (1994,)
Background

Until 2001, Greece had just two appearances in the finals of a major tournament. The first was in the European Champions of 1980 and the second in the 1994 World Cup. And then the unexpected happened... Otto Rehhagel took over as the team's coach, first completely transforming its style, attitude and mentality and then leading it to the most sensational achievement in football's history. The Euro 2004 triumph. In 2008, he added a third Euro appearance under Greece's belt and now the team faces a second World Cup challenge after a disastrous tournament sixteen years ago. Back then Greece exited the tournament with two 4-0 defeats and a less harsh 2-0 setback.

How They Qualified

Despite being drawn in a rather easy group, Greece had to fight hard their way to South Africa. The Greeks finished second in Group B of the UEFA zone, behind of Switzerland (to which Greece suffered defeats both home and away) and earned a World Cup spot by beating Ukraine in a two-legged play-off. Greee slumped to a scoreless draw in Athen in the first leg before Dimitris Salpingidis' goal in Donetsk sent Greece to South Africa.

Strengths

Greece have been accused as being one of the most boring and anti-football teams ever but their biggest strength lies in its solid defence. With two centre-backs and a libero, Otto Rehhagel revived in 2004 the old-fashioned but always effective catenaccio style. He was proved right...

Weaknesses

When it comes to creative football, Greece suffers greatly. The only attacking plan is to wait for a set piece so someone can jump to the ball and send it home. Otherwise, don't expect any rational attempts with the ball down the pitch.

Coach

Otto Rehhagel became again the 'Rehhakles' of Euro 2004 after he won yet another qualification for the Greek team in the finals of a major tournament. The German coach is definitely the most successful manager with the most unlikely squads, leading all the underdogs to top honors. The whole Greek national team is his own creation and the players look up to him as a father figure. This World Cup will most probably be his swan song as a coach.

Star Men

Giorgos Karagounis (Panathinaikos)

The natural leader of the team. A stubborn midfielder, who knows how to keep the ball and be the perfect playmaker in the big games. Without him, Greece's midfield most likely will have no real strength.
Sotirios Kyrgiakos (Liverpool)

The only Greek player in a top-class team. A strong defender, earned the nickname 'Highlander' after playing for Rangers and due to his long hair. He is very unlikely to get beaten when the ball comes in the air or in a personal challenge.

Sotiris Ninis (Panathinaikos)

Rehhagel doesn't trust him yet. He has used him only a few times. However, no doubt he is the most talented and promising Greek players. He will definitely be in Greece's squad and if he is given the chance, he will shine.

Best Footballing Moment

The Euro 2004 victory. In Greece, this success seems still feels like a good dream and a sign that anything is possible.

Off The pitch

Famous for: the strange and kind of unique 'Greek reality' habits that can see the players staying awake all night before a major game, drinking coffee!

Most likely to: be dearly welcomed by the strong Greek community of South Africa. The local leaders have said to be with the national team all the way to the final...

World Cup Objective

No one will be expecting a Euro 2004-like success story. Advancing from the group stage will be just great.
