Arsene Wenger: I Will Not Bankrupt Arsenal

The Frenchman will not be embarking on massive spending sprees, merely to indulge the fantasies of supporters...
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has forcefully reiterated that he is not planning any big-budget spending in this summer's transfer window, as he regards the financial stability of the club as being far more important than the fans' whimsical demands for new players.

Wenger's biggest transfer coup so far was the move of Andrey Arshavin from Zenit St. Petersburg in January, a move that confirmed that Arsenal can move in the transfer market when Wenger deems it necessary. However, chasing a raft of extravagantly expensive additions to the squad is simply not the way things are done at the Emirates Stadium, it seems.

"If you want me to get the club bust, I am not the person to do that, that’s for sure," the Frenchman affirmed.

"I believe every manager has the same problem, to manage within his own resources. I look now like I do not want to spend money, but I have nothing against spending money.

"I just feel we have a team who can be very competitive and we want, as always, to manage this club within its resources, and I will do that."

As for the players already at the club, Wenger insisted that he had faith in them, and that all that was required were subtle adjustments in personnel to move the side up another level.

"I believe in this team and from what I have seen in this team, that makes me quite optimistic. These players have the quality to beat anybody else," he asserted.

"If we can add one or two players with the resources we have, then we will do it."
