Ciro Ferrara is the new coach of Juventus, and has signed a one-year contract, according to RAI Sport.

Juventus have yet to officially announce the deal, but RAI claim that it has all been agreed for the legendary defender to take charge of the 2009-10 season.

Ferrara, who was caretaker boss for the last two games of the last season, following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri, had been locked in a three-way battle for the post with former team-mate Antonio Conte and Roma coach Luciano Spalletti.

Conte signed a new contract with Lecce earlier this week, while Spalletti was virtually ruled out this afternoon after a meeting with Roma president Rosella Sensi, who reportedly refused to release him.

The 42-year-old Ferrara, who will now be excused from his Italy national team duties if this appointment is confirmed, played for Juventus as a player from 1994 to 2005, winning eight Scudetti (one revoked), and he has since developed a reputation as a fine youth director.
