France inflict second Spain frustration

Holders Spain were held to their second goalless draw of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship despite dominating for long periods against the team they defeated in last year's final.

Ginés Meléndez's charges were unable to turn their greater share of possession into goals in Grimma, Rubén Pardo's free-kick which struck the post late on the closest they came. Spain play Group A leaders Switzerland in their final match of the section on Tuesday, while France − level on points with Spain − meet bottom side Italy.

Spanish control
Koke was at the hub of Spain's best efforts early on, though it was his partner in the centre of midfield, Alex, who was causing the French defence most concern with a series of curling free-kicks and corners. France responded with Ishak Belfodil, on his first start of the tournament, heading wide and then directing an effort off target from close range.

Boucher heroics
In an attacking change, Meléndez introduced Isco and Sobrino, with the latter being denied by France goalkeeper Zacharie Boucher from almost his first touch after 62 minutes. Philippe Bergeroo's team struggled to match Spain, who threatened several times in the closing 20 minutes. However, they could find no way through, with Boucher ensuring his team a point by saving on the goalline with Alex ready to pounce after Pardo's free-kick hit the post.
