65 Arrested And 51 Injured In Barcelona Celebrations

Barcelona's title celebrations turned ugly on Saturday evening as a minority of fans turned on the police...

Trouble flared in Barcelona, after Pep Guardiola's team officially won the league title, as revellers clashed with police and security forces in the city centre.

The Blaugrana were crowned champions after Real Madrid were beaten by Villarreal and around 15,000 people gathered at the top of Las Ramblas in the Canaletes area and in Placa Catalunya.

Celebrations remained lively but peaceful, with a large number of families joining the in the festivities, but that all changed at around 3am when the police came under attack from a group throwing cans and bottles.

Catalan police, known as the Mossos, and the Guardia Urbana, looked to quell the disturbances and warned fans to disperse or be removed from the area.

As objects rained down on them, including a bicycle, the police moved in, with the Mossos arresting 40 people and the Guardia Urbana 25, with four minors included in the list of those detained.

Around 36 fans were injured, while eleven Mossos officers and four Guardia Urbana officers were treated for cuts and abrasions as the trouble continued for half-an-hour.

Barcelona fans have been to the area at the top of Las Ramblas, where they traditionally meet to celebrate trophy wins or wins against Real Madrid, three times in the past few weeks.
